We tend to compare ourselves to others and think that something may be way over our head. For example, a new position opens up at your organization of which interests you but as you ponder risk, failure, image etc etc you start to under estimate yourself in succeeding. Don't do this. You are cutting yourself short. Your brain is just over computing and it needs to be corralled.
On the flip side you go meet a customer that has a high position in say IT Security. As you meet this person you start sizing them up and over analyzing what it is their agenda is, how much knowledge they have and what are their main objectives. First of all never ASSUME! But really, understand that you will never know any answers to those questions until you ask them. And don't automatically think they know everything there is to know about IT Security nor your solution. There are only a few people in this world that are true genius' and you may run into them but the chances are much slimmer that you don't. Don't get me wrong many IT Security professionals are very smart and educated individuals and I salute them for this. But, they cannot possibly keep up with all of the solutions to problems of every company in the marketplace and its your job to frame what issues the marketplace is facing and how you solve them.
Another quick note is that most people want to be helped. Just because a customer or colleague seems abrasive or standoffish does not mean they do not want your help. You need to work harder to drive the message that you can help in the way they need it. Think about this. Your smart phone is broke. You want it fixed. All you so is think about how to get it up and running and who to call. You want help! Find the need and help!
Don't under estimate yourself and Don't over estimate others!!!!

ReplyDeleteBut soon I will correct. We tend to compare ourselves to others and think that something may be way over our head.
